There is no concrete answer when it comes to how often you should paint the interior of your home because it depends on so many factors. For most people, the main reason will be décor based, such as if your current colours look dated or if you just moved in and the old tenants had a different style than you. A new coat of paint in a new colour or even in the same colour can be an inexpensive and quick way to update your entire home. Here are some general guidelines to repainting different parts of your house:

Hallways and Corridors

Usually, these walls see a lot of wear and tear because of scuff marks, fingerprints, dents and cracks below the surface. If the coat that was put on was high-quality, washable paint, then the walls may only need to be washed occasionally. Most repairs that happen on hallways and corridors are small touch-ups here and there. Although, they are still areas of the home that get painted the most, usually as often as every two to three years.

Living Rooms and Dining Rooms

Paint in these rooms tends to last longer, even if they are used quite often. That is because most of the activities in these rooms tend to be more formal. In most cases, higher quality paint is used in these areas since they are often the focal point of the home. Usually, draperies, furniture, plants and artwork prevents people from touching these walls. The primary urge behind the decision to paint these rooms is to change the overall décor and style of the area. These rooms typically only need repainting every five to seven years and only sooner for a style update.

Kitchens, Bathrooms and Laundry Rooms

Since these areas usually are the busiest, it is recommended that you only use the most durable types of paints for these walls. Kitchens require paints that are designed to withstand frequent washing and contact with aggressive cleaning compounds. The amount of cooking and food preparation that leads to staining and splattering no matter how careful you are mean a stronger product is needed. For bathrooms and laundry rooms, which must stand up to high degrees of humidity and moisture, water-based paints are recommended. With proper ventilation in place, repainting these rooms should be done every three to four years.

Bedrooms

For adult bedrooms, paint can generally last quite a long time, simply because bedroom walls do not often receive as much contact as higher traffic areas in the home. Although this may be the opposite for children’s bedrooms since they are also used as playrooms. Childrens’ rooms will inevitably undergo more incidences of wear and tear and should, therefore, be repainted as often as every two to three years.
